Just Breathe

Breathing. Its a lot easier said than done when it comes to cleans, jerks, and snatches, or any exercise, really. Think about it. Are you guilty of ever holding your breath during a lift? It happens to the best of us. But knowing how to breathe properly during a WOD is just as important as making sure you have proper grip when it comes time to lift that barbell. Just follow these simple steps. Step 1: Be Mindful of Your Breath That sounds kind of yoga-esque. But those folks are onto something. Start by paying attention to your breath all day, every day, notice how it changes, and make a mental note of how you feel. Step 2: Prepare for Class Your workout should start before the coach even begins the warm up with some deep breathing. These breaths shouldn't be rushed, so aim to get to class at least 5 minutes early. Step 3: Exhale On The Way Up After you've racked your weight and are in a position to begin, prepare for the exhale. As you lift, breathe out through your mouth. Step 4: Inhale On The Way Down Bringing the weight back down requires less energy, so it's a good time to inhale. To do it properly, make sure you're breathing in through your nose. Step 5: Recharge Use any rest periods as an opportunity to go back to your deep breathing. It will help prepare you for the next round of lifting. If you have any questions, or want to make sure you're doing it properly, just ask a coach the next time you're in class.
