How to Crush Competition Day

So you have a competition coming up. Whether you are nervous or not, it is important to set yourself up for success. By preparing for competition day you will be in the best position to perform to the best of your abilities. Use these simple but effective tips to crush it!

  1. Sleep. Make sure to get enough sleep (ideally somewhere between 8 to 9 hours) so that you wake up feeling well rested. Think about waking up 3 hours before your competition to give yourself ample time to eat breakfast, digest your food, and allow your body to fully wake up.
  2. Give yourself enough rest. Everyone is different, but leading up to competition it is important to make sure your body is adequately rested and ready to go. Some people like to “taper” their training and de-load leading up to a competition. Others like to stay on track and keep to their normal training schedule with maybe an extra day rest before competition. Find what works for you and stick with it. The last thing you want to do is train way too hard the week of a competition and feel beat up, sore, or even injured the day of the event.
  3. Fuel properly. Stay within your normal dietary routine the day before and day of the event. Avoid “carbo-loading” or trying some special competition prep meal that you read about online. Drink plenty of water and consume the same healthy foods that you normally eat the day before typical training.
  4. Come prepared. Make sure to prep all your stuff the night before. It’s important to make a list of all equipment and additional things you’ll need for a competition, as they are often longer days. Pack a cooler with water, fruits, snacks, and healthy proteins to keep you fueled throughout the competition.
  5. Have fun. Try your best not to stress. Too many people go into a competition completely freaked out about how they’re going to perform or how they’re going to finish at the end of the day. A little nervous excitement is fine, but realize that competition is nothing more than another day of fitness. Focus on having fun, hanging out with your fellow athletes, and learning a few things along the way!
