I’m Over 50--Is CrossFit Still For Me?

For older adults, the thought of getting back into physical shape -- especially if it involves stepping inside a gym -- seems downright daunting. Some adults may feel intimidated or believe that it's simply too late to get back into shape. Fortunately, that is not true. CrossFit is an ideal solution as it encourages participants of all ages and fitness levels to participate. CrossFit is highly versatile and flexible, and participants are encouraged to find a routine that works best for them. Now if your only exposure to CrossFit has been watching the Games on television, you may not be convinced. Dont you have to be the fittest on earth? Or at least be able to carry a hundred-pound sandbag on your shoulder while doing one-armed pull-ups and hefting a kettlebell the size of your head? Hardly. One of the main reasons why CrossFit is so appealing, even for older adults, is that it is designed around compound movements that engage every major muscle group in the body. Aside from promoting strength, these movements also help to increase flexibility -- something that aging adults lose over time. Youll hear the phrase functional fitness a lot in conjunction with CrossFit. What does this mean? It means that the movements you do in the gym are the same ones you do in your everyday life--and getting stronger and better at them at the gym will help you do them more effortlessly at home. Those overhead presses you did in the gym this morning? They will work the muscles that youll use to get that bag of dog food down from the shelf overhead safely tomorrow--without injuries. These functional movements also help to address, and correct, any underlying mobility issues. CrossFit is not a typical routine-based workout. Participants of all ages enjoy the variety of activities it has to offer, many of which revolve around non-traditional equipment and movements. You can get in a great workout and have fun along the way with various activities, from stepping up on a box to lifting weights and flipping tires if you feel compelled. Of course, you are encouraged to modify as necessary, with your Coachs guidance, along the way. Whether you're 20 or 50, you don't have to worry about walking into a CrossFit gym. Aside from the universally welcoming and encouraging atmosphere, youll get the tools you need to get back in shape according to your schedule and ability. Many participants find that they start out slowly, then find themselves trying out more difficult movements and harder routines simply because they can. Most CrossFit gyms have on-ramp programs that teach any beginner the basics--in a small group of your peers, or one-on-one. Benefits of CrossFit for Participants Over 50: Exercise routine tailored to your ability Increased stamina and physical ability Increased mobility Mental strength Supportive Community So hold off on the Silver Sneakers--and see instead what a CrossFit routine can do for your body and mind.
