Did you know that the shoes you wear can impact your athletic performance? That’s not to say a new pair of kicks will immediately result in a PR, but when you wear the right shoes for the right workout you’ll promote all sorts of good stuff for your body. And yeah, we know tons of gear gets pricey, so just pick and choose as you see fit. But here are some things to consider -- for both in and outside of the box.

If you’re going for a run

Minimalist shoes will keep you light on your feet, which can be especially helpful if you’re running for speed. Everyday street sneakers, or even weightlifting shoes, may leave you feeling like bricks are attached to your feet in this scenario. And who wants that?  Minimalist shoes are more flexible than a traditional running shoe, and as the name implies, there’s less cushioning. So you’ll feel more connected to the ground.

If you’re going to clean, snatch, or jerk

Yes, of course, this applies to all CrossFitters. So if you’re going to invest in just one single pair of workout shoes, these would be the ones to get. It’s true, traditional weightlifting shoes help you generate more force from the ground, which can be especially helpful when you’re trying to move a barbell from the floor. They also have more cushioning in the heel, and that promotes a deeper squat.  But the variety of cross training shoes designed specifically with the Crossfitter in mind has increased dramatically in the past few years.  You can get a shoe that will take you from sprints to overhead squats to box jumps, no wardrobe changes required.

If you’re going for a hike

Shoes with good grips are super important when you’re not on a paved surface. That’s because it’s easy to slip or slide on rough terrain, so you’ll want to do what you can to prevent that from happening. Rolling over a rock and twisting your ankle - no matter how minor - totally sucks. Best to minimize the chances of that happening with some good footwear.
