Heading over to Happy Hour has a lot going for it. It's a fun social scene with killer drink specials, and maybe even a cool cover band or guitar soloist. But your body won't be so happy about Happy Hour. Actually, for those looking to build lean muscle mass drinking is a really bad way to do it, regardless of the calories you burned in your last WOD. Here's why you should set that beer or wine glass down -- especially if you want to hit a new PR. Weight Gain Do you really want to undo the good work you've accomplished at the box? Alcohol is packed with empty calories. A glass of wine can run you anywhere from the low 100's to as much as 300 calories per glass. In comparison, those same 300 calories can be a meal that's packed with foods that will fuel your body for class. At the 100 calorie mark, there's a generous selection of fresh produce to choose from, and that comes with vitamins and minerals instead of a hangover. It Dehydrates You Your body needs to stay hydrated to perform at its best. That's why it's so important to drink water before, during, and after your workout. Dehydration can lead to decreased blood flow to the muscles, which translates to a longer recovery for you. It Inhibits Energy Sources Alcohol interferes with your body's ability to access the energy sources it needs for a good workout. It can prevent glucose circulation as well as the ability to metabolize carbohydrates, including those that are paleo-friendly like sweet potatoes. We're not suggesting that you eliminate your favorite beverage all together. Instead, just act responsibly, drink in moderation, and be strategic about it. Meaning, the night before your WOD -- or immediately following it -- is not the ideal time to be clinking wine glasses or beer bottles.
